Curbing our plastic addiction Flashcards
Dissonance
Dissonance, means a disagreement between two opposing ideas.
… so that creates psychological dissonance …
Decay
Decay, describes the natural process of sth being destroyed or breaking down into small particles.
Plastic doesn’t decay very quickly, so once we use it, it hangs around for a very long time.
Particularly marine animals are @ risk when they become entangled in plastic waste, or ingest it.
A Big Push
A big push, means strongly encourage. (Incentive)
We have this weird psychological attachment to this material that has been around & it’s like a push & pull.
@ the one time we’re so horrified by what we’re seeing- the whales dying, occeans vomiting plastics, beaming in from all over the world & @ the same time we’re being told we can’t leave without them.
Activism
Turning to activism, that’s taking action to change sth-
it could be social or political change, or a change in our behaviour or attitude.
I’m finding new awareness has peaked &
it’s going over into activism.
Psychological
Psychological, that’s sth that affects or involves our mind.
We have this weird psychological attachment to this thing … .
The first synthetic plastic- that’s plastic made entirely from man made material- was created over a 100 years ago
Do You know what it’s brand name was?
Bakelite
Each year, 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced & 40 percent of it is single use.
Biodegradable
Biodegradable- that’s the word that describes sth that can decay naturally without harming anything.
… but the problem is the most of it isn’t biodegradable.
