Is tourism harmful? Flashcards
Respect
Respect here is a verb, to treat sth with care. {Disrespect}
Misbehave: That’s doing bad or inappropriate things.
Locals & tourists have different attitudes towards the way they respect these beautiful & historical sites.
The authorities fear that some tourists are showing disrespect to the city & have introduced laws to clampdown on certain behaviour. The new rules are to stop tourists misbehaving.
Clampdown on == Crack down on
Clampdown means officially trying to stop or limit people doing sth.
Crackdown: Taking actions to restrict or stop certain activities.
Many of us have more leisure time & the cost of travelling has become relatively cheaper. Here lies the problem, the places we’re visiting are becoming more crowded, sometimes spoiling the atmosphere & the beauty, the things we came to see in the first place!
The authorities fear that some tourists are showing disrespect to the city & have introduced laws to clampdown on certain behaviour.
We’re going to introduce new regulations to crack down on what they call Disneyfication.
Wading bare-chested
Wading- that’s walking through water.
To not cover up the top half of your body- that’s bare-chested.
Roman’s don’t like to see tourists wading in their fountains bare-chested.
They have introduced new laws to clampdown on certain behaviours.
Objective
An objective is a plan or aim to achieve sth.
So the objective is to improve the life of the city for residents & for tourists themselves. These laws include: giving out sever fines to people who drop litter & those who attach ‘love padlocks’ to historic monuments.
The old & narrow streets are often packed with sightseers.
We’re going to introduce new regulations to crack down on what they call … .
Disneyfication
This term describes turning sth into an artificial, not real, commercial environment, similar to a Walt Disney theme park.
A really key one is they’re going to cap the number of cruises that can dock. We’re going to introduce new regulations to clampdown on what they call the Disneyfication.
Cap
Cap means to strict or limit.
A really key one is they’re going to cap the number of cruises that can dock.
One way to maintain the authentic feel of the city is to cap the number of cruises that can dock. ‘Stay over night or don’t come!’
