Can you spot a lie? Flashcards
Fib / Porkies
Fib, that’s the word for a small, inoffensive, lie.
Porkies- is an informal word for ‘pork pies’ & that rhymes with lies
… . That’s not what I was told!
I could tell by the smirk on your face that you were telling a fib.
It’s claimed they are judged to be too skilled @ telling porkies
Deceive
Trying to hide sth by tricking someone to gain advantage.
There’s the one when we try to deceive someones. That’s just a barefaced lie! We sometimes lie just to be nice.
Like you getting me to pay 10 pound for cinema tickets when actually they were only 5 pound. That’s just dishonest.
White lie
Small lies we tell to avoid upsetting someone. Those are lies that aren’t intended to give you any advantage.
Lying is sth I’m sure a lot of us do, sometimes to avoid trouble, sometimes to cheat people, or sometimes to impress someone.
That’s what neuroscientists think.
@ the heart
Sth that is @ the heart, is the most important or essential part. Key thing, vital
We want to make conversations polite because we want to cooperate with each other. Cooperation is @ the heart
How do you know if we are being lied to. Sometimes there are telltales signs, such as someone’s face turning red, or someone shuffling their feet. To detect lies listen out for the response latency.
Response latency
A term used in psychology to describe the time taken for between a stimulus or question & a response to it.
The bigger the gap, the more chance there is that someone is lying.
Concentrate on sth
Focus on sth.
We concentrate on what & how people are saying things too. Maybe honesty is the best policy. It’s claimed they are judged to be too skilled @ telling porkies/ fib.
