Unit 3- Francisella Flashcards
Francisella tularensis
Category A select agent requiring BSL-3, gram neg coccobacillus, aerobe, bipolar stain with giemsa, cysteine required for growth, no growth on blood agar, slow growth
Tularemia
Transmitted by arthropod, water, infected carcass, common in wild animals and rabbits, cats and sheep infected, lesions in liver, spleen, and lungs, intracellular
Human Tularemia
Skin ulcer and lymph node swelling, 7 forms based on route of infection, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, sweats, fever, weakness
Francisella tularensis subsp tularensis
Type A, tier 1 bioterrorism agent, only in north america and associated with land
Francisella tularensis subsp holarctica
Type B, less virulent than type A, worldwide and associated with water
Francisella Transmission
Wildlife and arthropod vector, systemic disease and granulomatous lesions, long environmental survival, human zoonosis
Francisella Virulence Properties
Capsule, LPS, intracellular invasion, pathogenicity island, invisible pathogen
Francisella Compromising Factors
Frank pathogen, highly virulent with low infectious dose
Francisella Immunity
Cellular immunity required, antibodies cannot reach intracellular, T cells kill infected cells
Francisella Diagnosis
Cysteine-glucose-blood-agar, slow growing, BSL-3 lab, serology, FA, PCR
