Unit 3- Bacterioidetes Flashcards
Bacteroides
Gram neg rods, pleomorphic, bile resistant, aerotolerant anaerobes, normal flora, produce capsule and SCFA
Anaerobic infection
Generally polymicrobial in nature
Facultative Anaerobes
Scavenge molecular oxygen to reduce redox potential
Obligate anaerobes
Produce abscess and metabolites that protect against antimicrobials and phagocytosis
Anaerobic Virulence Factors
Fimbriae, capsule, LPS, toxins, exoenzymes
Abscess Formation
Protects from phagocytosis and antibiotics, a collection of pus with buildup of fluid, WBS, dead tissue, and bacteria
Anaerobic Diagnosis
Samples transported in anaerobic transport medium, enriched media requires, anaerobic culture
Anaerobic Treatment
Surgical intervention and antibiotic therapy
Aerotolerant Anaerobes
Some produce superoxide dismutase to protect against oxidation
Bacteroides Virulence Factors
Fimbriae, capsule, LPS, zinc metalloprotease, protease, hemolysin, SCFA
Short Chain Fatty Acids
SCFA, inhibits phagocytosis, gives bad smell, beneficial effect on gut health
Bacteroides Cultrue
TSA with sheep blood or Bacteroides bile esculin agar, small while colonies, resistant to beta lactams
Cat Bite Bacteroides Infection
Inflammation, abscess, bacteremia, neutrophilic leukocytosis
Bacteroides Fragilis
Most clinically important Bacteroides in human
Bacteroides pyogenes
Soft tissue infection after cat bite
