Unit 1- Bacillus Flashcards
Bacillus
Gram positive rods, spore forming, aerobic or facultative anaerobic, non fastidious, motile, catalase positive, oxidase negative
Bacillus anthracis colonies
Flat, dry, grey colonies, not hemolytic
Bacillus cereus colonies
Large green colonies, hemolytic
Bacillus lichenform colonies
Dull, rough, wrinkled colonies
Anthrax Epidemiology
Endospores in soil are ingested, inhaled, or enter through the skin
Anthrax Pathogenesis
Capsule provides resistance to phagocytosis, produces exotoxins
Anthrax Toxins
Protective antigen, oedema factor targets neutrophils, lethal factor targets macrophages, dendritic cells, neutrophils, and epithelial cells
Anthrax Clinical Signs
Cattle and sheep have fever, depression, congestion, and abortion
Anthrax Lesions
Incomplete rigor mortis, hemorrhage and edema, unclotted blood, large soft spleen in cattle
Anthrax Diagnosis
Do not open carcass, presence of unclotted blood, gram stain, bacterial culture on blood agar
Anthrax Control
Vaccine, PPE, avoid movement, foot baths, disposal of carcasses, formaldehyde fumigation
