when was the first outbreak?
1918 whilst ww1 was being fought.
what was it also known as?
Spanish influenza.
where was the origin?
nobody knows.
where and when was the first confirmed case?
USA- March 1918.
how did it come?
in waves with the second being worse than the first.
when did the second wave come to Britain?
October -December 1918.
when did it spread in an alarming rate?
soldiers returned home from war and crowds gathered to celebrate armistice in Novemeber.
what percentage of the population caught the flu?
25%.
how many people out of the percentage of people who caught it died?
228,000.
how many people globally is the viruses believed to of killed?
at least 50 million.
why was it seen as unusual?
fit, younger people between 20 and 40 were worst affected.
what were the symptoms and what could it do that lead to what and what could that look like?
initially the same as those of other types of flu: high temperature, chills, headaches and pains.
virus attacked immune system and caused victims to develop bacterial pneumonia- cause the skin to turn red, blue and black. victims bled from the nose, mouth and ears.
how long after catching it would people die?
just hours of the first symptoms.
