what was the poor law?

A

JP’s appointed overseers of the poor to collect the poor rate. this money was used to support the poor.
begging was forbidden.
vagrants were whipped and sent back to the parish local area they were born in.
the impotent poor where put looked after in alms-houses.
work was provided for the able-bodied poor.
anyone refused to do work was forced into doing hard labour.
