who were the Mormons founded by?
joseph smith.
what did joseph smith claim?
angle Moroni visited him many times from 1823.
god showed him the way a book that started Jesus had gone to america after resurrection to start his true church.
what were the Mormon ideologies?
shared land and property ownership and didn’t believe in slavery.
when did the population count increase for them?
1830’s.
why did they face opposition?
believed in shared ownership, un christian ideas like polygamy, anti-slavery. went against capitalist banks in east, believed smith acted like an all powerful king.
who lead the building of salt lake city?
birmingham young.
why did they chose salt lake to settle?
isolated, protected by mountains and outside US laws.
when and how many mormons left to go to salt lake?
- 10,000.
what did they build up west of the bank of the missouri river?
winter quarters.
how much longer did they have left to go when they got to their winter quarters and how many had already died?
1000 miles.

when did they start moving again after the winter break and what was the name of the group who left?

in spring Brigham took a small group to find a place to settle before the rest came.
what did pioneer band do when they got to salt lake?
put necessities in place eg: irrigation ditch, planted potatoes.

summer of 1847.
who owned the land and how was it distributed once in salt lake?
their church and given according to peoples needs.

applied for statehood for utah. made it a territory. as governor.
when did the utah territory expand between?

what did utah expanding do to those in the east?
scared those individuals that mormonism would continue to grow and return to the east.
what did the government do in 1857?
government sent troops into utah to force young to change his laws on property, ownership and marriage.

killed 120 migrants who were travelling to california.
