what was the privy council and how did she use this to her advantage?
she chose who was on the privy council and could control its membership. contained 19 noblemen who had different opinions . she had ultimate casting vote and could chose which opinion she preferred the most.
where just advisors she had full control.
as they opposed each other they wouldn’t join up and oppose her.
method: control and conquer.
what was parliaments role and how did she control them?
power was limited. She could decided when they met and what they could and couldn’t talk about.
only sat for 35 months during her 45 year reign.
only really allowed parliament when she needed taxes.
physically hurt them if they talked about things she had banned such as marriage, succession, foreign policies.
what was a lord lieutenant?
political officers who had overall responsibility of each county region in England e.g. Yorkshire.
usually the most powerful noblemen in the area.
great honour and was expected to report any issues to the privy council.
what were the justices of the peace?
expected to keep law and order in there local areas as there was no official police force.
lead local courts and sentence criminals who had committed crimes.
important role in the implementation of the poor law and collection of taxes.
