America: newfoundland- Humphrey gilbert.
why was this journey made and what happened in the process of it?
wanted to establish a trade route in N.America to link up to trade with China. Also believed ENG needed a base in America which it could use to attack the Spanish from.
1583 he landed but there was no food and he and his men began to starve. tried to sail further south but they crashed and 80 men died.
remaining men tried to return home but many including gilbert drowned on there ship.
his ship called: the squirrel.
America: Roanoke-Walter Raleigh. what happened in the chain of events, how successful was it?
wanted to set up a trade route and a place to attack Spanish from.
wanted to discover gold and silver mines in N.America.
queen’s favourite at court so wouldn’t let him go.
he helped fund and organise the expedition and instead sent: Richard Grenville and Ralph Lane.
landed during a storm so lost many of there supplies including seeds which they hoped to plant future food from. Managed to rely on locals to survive in the beginning.
due to lack of supplies Grenville sailed back for more supplies.
during the autumn of 1585 there was a sever lack of food for them and natives so they could no longer help them. lane killed there chief- made them angry.
drake came to rescue them and took them back.
America: Guiana.
what happened and how was it a good thing?
early 1590’s Walter Raleigh planned an expedition to the region of Guiana in S.America. dreamed of finding huge quantities of gold in the fabled city of Manioca.
d1595 expedition didn’t discover the gold but in 1596 published a pamphlet name: ‘discovery of the large, rich, beautiful empire of Guiana.’ the marvels and wonders it contained led to more explores to seek an empire in the 17 &18 centaury’s.
America: Sir Francis Drake.
what did he want. what did he do, and what event happened that was new?
wanted to gain personal wealth and glory from voyages but also claim territory for ENG. hated Spain and in 1572 captured £40,000 worth of silver when he attacked their ships travelling from Mexico to Peru. On his return he was rich and famous.
1577 next voyage funded by Liz and Cecil at court. came back via Pacific to avoid Spanish ships in the Atlantic - caused him to become first man to circumnavigate the globe.
East Asia: Ralph Fitch.
what were his original goals, why didn’t he complete them, what draw backs did he face and what was the end result?
Turkey company sent Fitch to research trade in India, S.E Asia and China. carried letters of introduction from queen to Mughal and Chinese emperors who ruled most of E.Asia. set off from ENG with 4 other men in march 1583. in Hormuz arrested as spies released and continued there journey to Agra . he carried on the journey a lone. at macella he wasn’t allowed to continue to the S.China sea so he returned home 8 yrs later.
didn’t make any direct lines but he did see the opportunities and opened up the first stages of communication.
East Asia: James Lancaster and The East Indian Trading Company.
what did he start establishing and what did he manage to complete?
April 1601James given command of the Trading Company.
expedition established ENG first trading post in the East with Java in 1602.
ENG ships began to bring hoke spices.
his voyage in 1601-3 first step towards the British Empire.
