Types of Color Combinations
Involves one hue only.
- Harmony of self-notes of the same hue
- Includes all values and intensities of this single hue
Monochromatic
Involves two or more hues which lie adjacent to each other on the color wheel and contain the same hue in each.
Analogous
Involves any two hues of the color wheel (lie directly opposite to each other).
- Red and green
- Yellow and purple
- Orange and blue
- Also can be intermediate hues
Complementary
Involves 3 hues; as nearly as possible, should be at least three hues from each other on the color wheel. Examples:
- Primary hues- red, yellow and blue
- Secondary hues- orange, green and purple
Triad
Involves 3 hues. The complement of the primary hue is not included. It is the two hues on either side of the direct complement that are employed/used.
Split Complementary
Involves 4 hues: two adjacent hues on the color-wheel and their complements.
Double Complements
Involves 4 hues. Two separated hues and their complements. Examples:
- Red and yellow- Green and purple
- Red and blue - Green and Orange
- Can use intermediates
Tetrad
A color scheme of contrasting but non-complementary hues. Involves 2 hues.
- Better schemes include both a warm and a cool hue
- Red and blue
- Yellow and blue
- Yellow and green
- Orange and green
- Orange and purple
