In its broadest sense, refers to the moistening, and softening, of any tissue decomposing in a liquid medium.
Maceration
A spot of discoloration level with the skin; a freckle.
Macula
A red-purple or purplish-red (e.g. a product of red and blue illumination projected on the same area).
Magenta
An insect larva; especially flies.
Maggot
Those requiring a long period of time, are extensive, require advanced technical skill, and expressed written consent to perform.
Major Restoration
The cosmetic material; the way in which one is painted; the process of application of a cosmetic.
Makeup
The horseshoe-shaped bone forming the inferior jaw.
Mandible
The small oval depression on the zygomatic process of the temporal bone into which the condyle of the mandible articulates, just anterior to the external auditory meatus. Forms the temporal mandibular joint (TMJ).
Mandibular Fossa
Inferior jaw protrudes.
Mandibular Prognathism
The furrow beneath the jawline which rises vertically on the cheek; an acquired facial marking.
Mandibular Sulcus
A stitch used to hold the mouth closed; placed behind the lips, one part is passed through around the inferior jaw at the median plane, while the other part extends through the nasal septum or the superior frenulum.
Mandibular Suture
Handle; upper part of the sternum.
Manubrium
The boundaries or edges.
Margins
A cosmetic preparation used to darken the eyelashes.
Mascara
Anything that hides or conceals, as cosmetics; a likeness of the face, as one cast in plaster.
Mask (Face Mask)
The extent of volume or size.
Mass
A soft, white, oily preparation used as a protective coating for external tissues; abase for cream cosmetics and a wax softener; an emollient.
Massage Cream
Muscles of mastication which close the mandible.
Masseter Muscles (Chewing Muscles)
Chewing.
Mastication
The rounded projection on the inferior portion of the temporal bones just posterior to the lobe of the ear.
Mastoid Process
Having a dull finish; as afforded by the application of loose powder, lack of sheen.
Matte
A paired bone with several processes that form the skeletal base of most of the superior face, the roof of the mouth, sides of the nasal cavity, and floor of the orbit.
Maxilla
Middle; nears the ______ plane.
Medial
Tiny prominence on the midline of the superior mucous membrane.
Medial Lobe
Situated or placed in the middle of the body dividing it into the right and left halves.
Medial Plane
Middle section of the thorax, that is, between the two lungs.
Mediastinum
Derma-surgery or restorative wax.
Medium Wax
Latin for marrow; hence the inner portion of an organ in contrast to the outer portion or cortex.
Medulla
Inferior part of the brain stem.
Medulla Oblongata
The brown to black-brown pigment in the epidermis and hair.
Melanin
Sheet or thin layer.
Membrane
Protective coverings around the brain and spinal cord; from external to internal, they are the dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater.
Meninges
Inflammation of the meninges.
Meningitis
A triangular projection on the inferior portion of the anterior mandible.
Mental Eminence
Elevates and protrudes the inferior lip, wrinkles the skin over the chin.
Mentalis Muscle
Situated in the middle, median.
Mesial
A nasal classification which is medium board and medium-low bridged; common to individuals of Asian descent.
Mesorrhine
One millionth of a meter.
Micron (Micrometer)
A vertical line drawn from the center of the medial border of the base of the axillary space.
Mid-Axillary Line
Region of the brain stem that lies between the diencephalon and the pons.
Midbrain
Those requiring a minimum effort, skill, or time to complete.
Minor Restoration
Materials which can be mixed or blended together.
Miscible
A composition of two or more substances that are not chemically bound to each other.
Mixture
Constructing a form with a pliable material such as wax or clay.
Modeling
A chemical added to the embalming fluid either to reduce its undesirable effects or enhance its desirable effects.
Modifying Agent
Necrotic tissue that is wet as a result of inadequate venous drainage; may be accompanied by bacterial infection.
Moist Gangrene (Wet Gangrene)
The grinding teeth in the back part of each jaw.
Molar Teeth
Any fungus which forms slimy or cotton-like growth on tissues, foodstuffs, etc.; also the deposit produced by such fungi or a reversed form in which anything is cast or shaped; a negative casting impression employed in a life mask or death mask.
Mold
A small spot on the skin, usually of a dark color and slightly elevated and often hairy; a pigmented nevus.
Mole (Nevus)
Variations of one hue; tints, tones, and shades of one hue.
Monochromatic
Pertaining to the Yellow race.
Mongoloid
To diversify with spots or blotches of a different color (or shade).
Mottle
A device used in the mouth for shaping the contour of the lips.
Mouth Former
The external partition of the nostrils.
Movable Septum (Columna Nasi)
A sticky, viscous fluid that covers many internal surfaces in the body; it consists of the protein mucin and a large amount of water.
Mucus
The visible red surfaces of the lips; the lining membrane of body cavities which communicate with the exterior.
Mucous Membranes
Pectoralis muscle, external intercostals, internal intercostals, and the diaphragm.
Muscles of the Thorax
Deltoid and Teres Major.
Muscles of the Shoulder
A stitch used to hold the mouth closed; placed behind the lips; part is passed through the muscles tangent to the inferior jaw (while the other part extends through either the nasal septum or the superior frenulum).
Musculature Suture
To reduce the intensity of a color by the addition of another color.
Mute
Disfigured by a loss of a natural part by force.
Mutilated
Fatty insulating sheath that surrounds all but the thinnest nerve fibers; formed of the plasma membrane of supporting cells wrapped in concentric layers around the nerve fiber.
Myelin Sheath
The nostrils.
Nares
Directly inferior to the glabella and forming a dome over the superior portion of the nasal cavity.
Nasal Bones
The surface of the nose extending from the root of the nose to the base of the nasal bones.
Nasal Bridge
The orifice in the bony face bounded by the margins of the nasal bones and the maxilla.
Nasal Cavity
The dividing wall between the two nasal cavities, formed posteriorly of bone (mainly the vomer and the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid), anteriorly of cartilage.
Nasal Septum
The sharp, bony projection located medially at the inferior margin of the nasal cavity.
Nasal Spine of the Maxilla
Embalming instrument used to aspirate the throat by means of the nostrils.
Nasal Tube Aspirator
The eminence of the cheek and adjacent to the mouth; extending from the superior part of the posterior margin of he wing of the nose to the side of the mouth; a natural facial marking.
Nasolabial Fold
The furrow originating at the superior border o the wing of the nose and extending to the side of the mouth; an acquired facial marking.
Nasolabial Sulcus
Depression superior tot he medial portion of the superior palpebrae.
Naso-Orbital Fossa
Those that are present at birth; hereditary.
Natural Facial Markings
Areas of color in the tissues normally darker than the adjacent areas.
Natural Shadows
Antemortem. physiological death of the cells of the body followed by their replacement. Occurs almost totally int he body every 14 years.
Necrobiosis
Pathological death of a tissue still a part of the living organism.
Necrosis
An instrument used to impel specially designed metal pins (with wire attached to each pin) into bone. Normal use would be as mouth closures.
Needle Injector
A mold made from an object and used for casting a duplicate of the object.
Negative Mold
An antiquated term pertaining to the black race.
Negroid
A new and abnormal formation of tissue, as a tumor or growth.
Neoplasm
Achromatic, white, black , or gray.
Neutral Colors
A birthmark; A congenital skin blemish; any congenital anomaly, including various types of birthmarks and all types of moles.
Nevus
A type of arterial fluid which contains inactive dyes that will not impart a color change upon the body tissues of the deceased.
Non-Cosmetic Fluid
The most common characteristics of each feature; typical, common, average.
Norm
A relatively deep indentation, usually between two projections.
Notch
Pertaining to the nape of the neck.
Nuchal
Slanting or inclined, neither perpendicular nor horizontal.
Oblique
The shallow, curving groove below the medial corner of the eyelids; a natural facial marking.
Oblique Palpebral Sulcus
A frontal dead form in which the head is long and narrow throughout.
Oblong
Lowest part of the back and base of the cranium, forming a cradle for the brain.
Occipital Bone
The prominence at the center of the external surface of the occipital bone.
Occipital Protuberance
Draws the scalp posteriorly and anteriorly and raises the eyebrows.
Occipitofrontalis Muscle (Epicranius)
Reasonably anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral, contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials that may result from the performance of a worker’s duties.
Occupational Exposure
Characteristic of yellowness; any of the class of natural earths; mixtures of hydrated oxide of iron with various earthy materials, ranging in color from pale yellow to orange, and red, and used as pigments (yellow-ochre).
Ocher
A coloring medium in which the pigments are combined with a petroleum product.
Oil-Base Cosmetics
Pertaining to the sense of smell.
Olfactory
A yellow-tan of medium value with a greenish tinge.
Olive
The double bellied muscle from the collar bone to the tongue bone.
Omohyoideus
The sate of being opaque.
Opacity
Not transparent or translucent; not allowing light to pass through a concealing cosmetic.
Opaque
Any and all techniques to treat a problem area, excision, incision, wicking.
Operative Corrections
Pertaining to the eyes.
Ophthalmic (Optic, Orbital)
The furrows radiating from the lateral corner of the eye; acquired facial marking.
Optic Facial Sulci (Crows Feet)
Concerning the mouth.
Oral
The mouth; the orifice containing the teeth and tongue.
Oral Cavity
The hue obtained from the mixture of red and yellow; a secondary color of pigments.
Orange
Close the eyelids; compresses the lacrimal sacs.
Orbicularis Oculi Muscles
Closes the lips.
Orbicularis Oris Muscle
The eye socket.
Orbital Cavity (Orbit)
Bags under the eyes; the fullness between the inferior palpebrae and the oblique palpebral sulcus.
Orbital Pouch
The entrance or outlet of any body cavity; an opening such as the mouth or anus.
Orifice
The attachment of a muscle which moves least when the muscle contracts; the beginning.
Origin
Pertaining to the mouth.
Oris
An adornment or embellishment; a cosmetic material manufactured for street wear; the technique of cosmetic application to beautify the face.
Ornamental
The passage of solvent from a solution of lesser to one of greater solute concentration when the two solutions are separated by a semipermeable membrane.
Osmosis
Preservation of the body’s surface (to dry and harden lesions), of excisions and cavities, or of areas that received inadequate arterial preservative materials used in osmotic embalming. Includes: surface packs, embalming powders, and autopsy gels.
Osmotic Embalming (Surface Embalming)
Small bones; specifically one of the bones of the tympanum of drum of the ear.
Ossicles
The frontal head form in which the head is generally egg-shaped, with the cranium slightly wider than the jaws, most common geometric head form.
Oval
A color modified by an overlying color; a color which visibly predominates more than general color; a wash.
