Lecture Notes Respiratory Flashcards
Pharynx “throat” has 3 regions
1) nasopharynx- includes adenoids & opening to auditory tubes
2) oropharynx-includes stratified squamous epithelium + uvula
3) laryngopharynx-stratified squamous; “the fork in the road”
Conducting passageways from respiratory bronchioles through alveolar sacs; simple cuboidal epithelium
Alveolar ducts
Alveoli
may be present as individual alveoli on respiratory bronchioles,
or in clumps called alveolar sacs epithelium; highly vascular (capillaries
; site of gas exchange; simple squamous ); surfactant & macrophages.
3 types of bronchioles
1) Bronchioles- Lined with PCCE
2) Terminal bronchioles-Simple ciliated columnar epithelium
3) Respiratory bronchioles-Simple cuboidal. Smooth muscle dominates the bronchial wall
Breaks the surface tension of water
Surfactant
Without surfactant,
The surface tension collapses the alveoli
Separates the 2 pleural cavities
Mediastinum
Depression in the left lung
Cardiac notch
Found in the Pons and
Medulla oblongata
Respiratory centers
In addition to these subconscious reflexes, there can be
Voluntary motor signals
