What are gallstones?
Abnormal deposits of material that form within the biliary tree, most commonly the gallbladder
Also known as cholelithiasis.
What are most gallstones composed of?
Cholesterol from concentrated bile released from the bile ducts
What is cholestasis?
Blocked bile outflow
What is cholelithiasis?
Gallstone(s)
What is choledocholithiasis?
Gallstone(s) in the bile duct
What is biliary colic?
Intermittent RUQ pain from gallstones irritating bile ducts
What is cholecystitis?
Inflammation of the gallbladder
What is cholangitis?
Inflammation of the bile ducts
What is gallbladder empyema?
Pus in the gallbladder
What is a cholecystectomy?
Surgical removal of gallbladder
What is a cholecystostomy?
Inserting drain into gallbladder
What are the three factors triggering gallstone formation?
Supersaturation, Stasis, Sepsis

What are acute complications of gallstones stuck in the gallbladder neck or cystic duct?
- Biliary colic
- Acute cholecystitis
- Mirizzi syndrome

- Gallbladder mucocele
- Chronic cholecystitis

- Obstructive jaundice

- Cholangiocarcinoma

- Gallstone ileus

30 minutes to 8 hours

- Sudden onset severe RUQ pain
- Nausea, vomiting
- Sweating, palpitations
What is the gold standard test for diagnosing biliary colic?
Ultrasound
What is the management for asymptomatic gallstones?
Conservative treatment, no intervention required
What surgical procedure is indicated for symptomatic gallstones?
Cholecystectomy
What are common symptoms of post-cholecystectomy syndrome?
- Diarrhoea
- Indigestion
- Epigastric or RUQ pain/discomfort
- Nausea
- Intolerance of fatty foods
- Flatulence
