What is benign essential tremor?
A relatively common condition associated with older age characterized by a fine tremor of the voluntary muscles
Most notable in the hands but can affect other areas including head and jaw.
What are the clinical features of benign essential tremor?
Characteristics include:
* Fine tremor (6-12hz)
* Symmetrical
* More prominent with voluntary movement
* Worse when tired, stressed, or after caffeine
* Improves with alcohol
* Absent during sleep
None of these features are harmful or require treatment if not causing functional or psychological problems.
List the differential diagnoses for benign essential tremor.
- Parkinson’s
- Multiple sclerosis
- Huntington’s chorea
- Hyperthyroidism
These conditions may present with similar symptoms and should be considered during diagnosis.
What medications can be used to improve symptoms of benign essential tremor?
- Propranolol
- Primidone (barbiturate anti-epileptic)
These medications may help reduce the severity of the tremor.
