Pathophysiology of acute bronchitis
A
- self-limiting chest infection (~3 weeks)
- inflammation of trachea + major bronchi
- oedematous, large airways
- increased sputum production

Symptoms of acute bronchitis
A
- cough (+/- sputum)
- sore throat
- rhinorrhoea
- wheeze
- low grade fever

Diagnosing acute bronchitis
A
- clinical
- CRP levels >100

Differentials for acute bronchitis
A
pneumonia (will have focal chest signs, dullness, dyspnoea)

Management of acute bronchitis
A
Conservative:
- analgesia, fluids
- antibiotics (meets criteria): doxycycline

Criteria for antibiotics in acute bronchitis
A
- systemically very unwell
- comorbidities
- CRp 20-100 (delayed prescription)
- CRP > 100 (immediate prescription)
