young children may have mild infection s/s
fever, malaise, headache, anorexia, abdominal pain, painful sore throat, enlarged spleen and liver
tx
supportive
steroids for tonsilar swelling and impending airway obstruction, massive splenomegaly, myocarditis, hemolytic anemia
antibiotics are not used bc of nonallergic rash
vaccine
no
precautions
standard
complications
peritonsialr abscess
sinusitis
mastoiditis
neurological disorders
hemologic disorders
nursing considerations
antipyretics and analgesics
warm salt water for gargling
bed rest
avoid intimate contact
contact sports and strenuous activity when liver and spleen are normal size
avoid alcohol for 3 mo after liver function tests are normal
