CBT
What is the aim of anger management
help offenders who struggle to control their aggression
What does offenders aggression cause them to do
commit anti-social and/or criminal behaviours
What is anger management useful for
reducing hostile and violent behaviour in prisons, but can also become a form of rehabilitation for offenders who have committed crimes.
What are the 3 main aims of anger management
1) Cognitive restructuring
2) Regulation of arousal
3) Behavioural strategies
Describe cognitive restructuring
where offenders gain self-awareness and control of the feelings/thoughts that lead to anger.
Describe Regulation of arousal
where offenders learn to control their physiological state.
Describe Behavioural strategies
where skills such as problem-solving, strategic withdrawal from situations that lead to anger and assertiveness are all taught and practiced
What is the main anger management course in prisons called
CALM
What does CALM stand for
Controlling Anger and Learning to Manage it
What does CALM consist of
24 two-hour sessions, which aim to reduce the frequency, intensity and duration of anger.
How many stages of CALM are their
6
What does CALM focus on
on thinking patterns that lead to criminal behaviour, learning how to solve problems without getting angry, improving communication skills and developing strategies to prevent relapses of anger.
What is the 1st stage of CALM
Motivating the offender to want to change.
What is the 2nd stage of CALM
Teaching the offender how to recognise physical changes that occur in the build up to their anger and how these feelings can be avoided/reduced.
What is the 3rd stage of CALM
Challenging the offenders own irrational thoughts, which contribute to feelings of anger.
What is the 4th stage of CALM
Learning skills which help the offender to react differently in situations that might cause aggression e.g. using ‘thought stopping’ where aggression is redirected into appropriate behaviours such as sport, or learning to hear criticism without reacting emotionally (fogging).
What is the 5th stage of CALM
Offenders will practice the skills that have learnt in situations that may usually make them angry.
What is the 6th stage of CALM
Offenders will be taught to avoid triggers for their aggression and be given coping strategies if they begin to feel angry.
What teaching techniques are used in CALM
Personal assignments, modelling, role-play, teamwork, and self and peer evaluation
