What did Freud say we pass through?
A series of psychosexual stages - a series of developmental stages through which all children progress, and in the same order.
To develop a healthy personality what do we have to do?
Pass through all the stages
What can occur in some stages?
Fixation influencing adult behaviour
How does one become fixated
Frustration or underindulgence
What is frustration
When the stage has not been resolved because needs have not been met (undersatisfied)
What is over indulgence
When the needs of the child have been more than satisfied, and the result is that the child feels too comfortable and reluctant to move on to the next stage
What is the 1st stage?
The oral stage
When does the oral stage occur?
From birth to 18 months
In the oral stage where is pleasures received from?
Feeding
Why can people become fixated in the oral stage?
Due to early or late weaning
What behaviours do those described as having an oral personality show?
Smoking Chewing Biting (pens, nails) Love of Eating and drinking Suck their thumb
What does this assumption say?
Adult behaviours and personalities are shaped by the influence of childhood experiences
What are those weaned to early described as? (frustration)
Orally aggressive

The anal stage

18 months to 3 years

Anally retentive

How are children who’s parent took a relaxed approach to potty training described?
Anally expulsive

What is the third psychosexual stage?
The phalic stage
When does the phalic stage occur?
3 to 6 years
What occurs during the phalic stage?
- learning gender behaviour - identification with same sex parent
If you don’t identify with your same sex parent what occurs in the phalic stage?
Fixation

Problems with authority Vanity Homosexuality

The latency stage
When is the latency stage?
6 to puberty
What occurs in the latency stage?
No psychosexual development
What is the fifth psychosexual stage?
The genital stage
When is the genital stage?
Puberty

Well balanced individual ‘Normal’ behaviour
