1.1.2 Psychosurgery evaluation Flashcards
Cosgrove and Rauch findings positve or negative?
Positive
What did Cosgrove and Rauch find?
Bilateral cingulotomy was effective in 65% of patients suffering from major affective disorder (depression/bipolar) and 56% patients suffering from OCD
What is one weakness to Cosgrove and Rauches findings
Only about 25 patients a year are currently treated in this way in the USA so it is diffcult to make conclusions about the effectivness
Mayberg findings positve or negative?
Positive
What did Mayberg find?
4 out of 6 patients with severe depression had their symptoms dramatically reduced after having deep brain stimulation
Moniz findings positve or negative?
Positive
What did Moniz find?
70% success rate in for patients suffering from schizophrenia and anxiety
Negatives of psychosurgery
- There is no scientific evidence to support the claim prefrontal lobotomies had any effect on psychological disorder
- Symptoms are treated rather than the underlying cause of the psychological disorder
Was Comers findings positive or negaitve
Negative
What did Comer find
- Psychosurgery was both inapropriate and ineffective
- Lobotomies had a fatality rate of up to 6% and a range of severe physical side effects such as brain seizures and lack of emotional responsivness
What did Bridges at al (1994) state
It is a treatment of last resort so no controlled trial against a comparable treatment is possible
