3.2.5 CBT evaluation social implications Flashcards
What is a social implication of CBT in terms of geographical location of a patient
Availability of CBT is dependant on geographical catchment
Why is the availability of CBT dependant on geographical catchment
NHS in England is organised into trusts where each trust provides services for a particular area. All of these trusts manage their own budgets
What variations between geographical locations can be seen
The number of people offered CBT can range from 67% to just 14% with an average of 50% not being offered CBT by their trust
What issue does offering of CBT being based on geographical location raise
Not everyone has equal access to treatment which is what the NHS is all about
What can CBT provide for schizophrenics even though it cant provide a cure
Helps schizophrenics develop the skills needed to cope with the symptoms
What is the reason CBT isn’t widely available on the NHS
COST - CBT is very expensive treatment
What did Kuipers et al find about the economic impact of CBT
Costs involved in delivering CBT were likely to be offset by the reduces the need for emergency treatment in the future as it has relatively long success rates
What does this suggest about the economics of CBT
Use of CBT is initially costly, but in the long term makes a saving as individuals are less likely to need emergency physciatric treatment.
What is one problem with Kuipers findings about the economic implications
Trusts budgets often only allow them to deal with immediate care requirements so they cant look at long term requirements. trusts do not balance long term and short term costs
