2.2.3 Analyses (content, correlational) (Non experimental) Flashcards
what is a content analysis?
a method for producing quantitative data from qualitative material
what is a content analysis used for?
analysing and assessing the content of communication
what sort of communications can a content analysis be used on?
newspapers
music videos
tv/film
social media
what are the steps of a content analysis?
- choose type of media
- Develop research and null hypothesis
- Devise coding units
- Tally content with coding units
- Themed and draw conclusions
What is an issue of devising objectively operationalising coding units?
It can be difficult
Because it’s very much open to interpretation
What are some issues with content analysis?
Time consuming
(Expensive)
Small samples are used (hard to generalise)
What is an advantage of content analysis?
High in ecological validity
What is a correlational analysis?
Statistical technique which measures the strength and direction of a relationship between two or more variables
What are co variables?
2 variables we look at to see if they are in a relationship
What is a perfect positive correlation?
+1
What is no correlation?
0
What is a perfect negative correlation?
-1
Is a correlation analysis experimental or not?
Non experimental
When is a correlational analysis beneficial?
When studying co variables you can’t experiment in a lab setting for ethical and practical reasons
One issue of a correlational analysis is you can’t establish a cause and effect relationship explain why?
You don’t know which variable causes the other
