2.5.1 levels of measurement Flashcards
what are the four levels of measurement?
nominal data
ordinal data
interval data
ratio data
what is nominal data?
frequency headcount of the no. of times something occurred found in discrete categories
give an example of nominal data?
the no. of people who passed an exam
what is a strength of nominal data?
easy to analyse
what is a weakness of nominal data?
least powerful - doesn’t tell us a lot
when is a variable measured at ordinal level?
when scores in the variable are ordered in rank
give an example of ordinal data:
grades for an exam
in ordinal data what is unknown?
intervals between each rank - you don’t know how much better people have done
what is a weakness of ordinal data?
limited
what is a strength of ordinal data?
more info than nominal
what is interval data?
data that measures on a scale allowing to order values highest to lowest and know distance between each rank
what can interval data be?
negative e.g. temperature
what is ratio data?
interval data with a zero point
data that measures on a scale allowing to order values highest to lowest and know distance between each rank
give an example of ratio data:
exam scores
what is a strength of ratio data?
most useful
