Water Flashcards
Is water polar or nonpolar?
Water is a polar molecule
Hydrophilic
- Dissolve in water
- Polar
Hydrophobic
- Do not dissolve in water
- Non-polar
- They do not have any charges
Is water a solvent or solute? Why?
Water is a solvent because it is capable of dissolving many different substances.
Hydrophobic effect
When polar molecules like water exclude non-polar ones. Leading to the folding of proteins and creating of cell membranes.
What is hydrogen bonding?
An interaction between a hydrogen atom (slight positive charge) and an electronegative atom (NOF)
How is hydrogen bonding modeled?
Hydrogen bonding is modeled by using a dotted line.
Property of cohension
The ability of water molecules to stick together because of hydrogen bonds.
3 ways hydrogen bonding effect the specialties of water
- The phases of matter
- Property of cohesion/high surface tension/water movement
- Temperature resistant
What is Ph?
is a measure of the concentration of protons in solution
Acids
Ph lower than 7
Bases
Ph higher than 7
