Chapter 8.2- Calvin cycle Flashcards
What are the three major steps of the calvin cycle?
carboxylation
Reduction
Regeneratiion
What is carboxylation?
step 1:
- when carbon dioxide get added to a 5 carbon ring
- carbon dioxide is added to RuBP
- Rubisco catalyzes the reaction and 2 3- phosphoglycerate is formed
What is Reduction?
Step 2: which energy and electrons are transferred
to the compounds formed in step 1
What is regeneration?
Step 3: regeneration of the 5-carbon molecule
Why is NADPH and ATP essential to the Calvin cycle? Why is calvin cycle only produced in sunlight?
the Calvin cycle cannot operate without the steady supply of NADPH and ATP. NADPH ATP are products of light photosynthesis therefore it only can occur in light.
Experiment that explains how carbon is incorporated into carbohydrates?
Preventing carboxylation resulted in an excess of RuBP and less 3-PGA,
leading researchers to determine that the initial step in the Calvin cycle
unites the 5-carbon RuBP with , resulting in the production of two
molecules of 3-PGA.
What do cells do with excess carbohydrates?
they store it into starch because Strach does not undergoes osmosis or potentially damage the cell
What does light energy produce?
NADPH and ATP and oxygen
