nondisjunction Flashcards
The effects of Nondisjunction
- Results in an extra or missing chromosome
- One daughter cell receives a chromosome while the other daughter does not
- Create cancer cells
Nondisjunction is caused by
failure of a pair of chromosomes to separate during anaphase of a cell division.
When nondisjunction takes place in mitosis….
cancer cells
When nondisjunction takes place in meiosis…
gametes have missing of extra chromosome
First division nondisjunction
The homologous chromosomes fail to separate, and all of the resulting gametes have an extra or missing chromosome meiosis 1
Second division nondisjunction
Sister chromatids fail to seperate, giving rise to gametes with an extra chromosome, a missing chromosome, and normal chromosomes
Down syndrome is a result of…
an extra copy of chromosome 21
What can increase a person’s risk to down syndrome
The age of the mother.
The cells are stuck in M phases eggs start maturing and the ability of defects happening increases
Autosomes or sex chromosomes have a higher fatality rate?
Autosomes because the sex chromosomes defects are not fatal
Klinefelter syndrome
XXY male.
Male puberty comes to a halt no growth spurt no sperm
Turner syndrome
X female
There is no form of sexual maturation. No menstruation body development comes to a halt.
