the individuals of a given biological species found in one place at one time.
Mark-recapture:
are used to estimate the population size of mobile organisms
Random dispersion
individual distribution without a predictable pattern
Uniform dispersion
Individuals are better off when far from others as possible
Clustered dispersion
When resources are clustered or spatial proximity to other individuals enhances fitness
Carrying capacity (K)
is the maximum number of individuals in a single population that an environment can support.
Intraspecific competition
becomes a factor; competition for resources is likely more intense with “like” individuals.
Density-dependent
factors can include things like competition for resources (space, food, mates) disease rates.
Density-independent
factors often include abiotic things like climatological events or other physical factors.
