Glycolysis/the citric acid cycle Flashcards
1
Q
Is glycolysis anaerobic or aerobic
A
anaerobic
2
Q
Phase 1 :
A
Invest
- An endergonic process where ATP gets hydrolyzed
- Takes place in the cytoplasm
- The negatively charged phosphates allow for it to split into two parts
3
Q
Phase 2 :
A
Cleavage
- 6 carbon molecules splits into two carbon molecules
4
Q
Phase 3:
A
Payoff
- 2 ATP, 2 pyruvate, and 2 NADH are produced
5
Q
Glycolysis
A
The process in the cytoplasm where glucose is broken down and synthesized to produce pryuvate
6
Q
Pyruvate oxidation
A
- in eukaryotic cells: mitochondrial matrix
- Pyruvate gets split to produce carbon dioxide and ATP is produced
- Electrons get transferred from NAD+ to NADH
- The remaining Acetyl group gets moved onto the next step
7
Q
The citric acid cycle
A
- Acetyl group is fully oxidized to carbon dioxide
- twice as many ATP and electron carriers are produced
- Acetyl group gets regenerated
- goes from a 6 carbon molecule to a 4 carbon molecule releasing more carbon dioxide
End goal:
- 3 NADH
- 2 FADH2
- 2 ATP
- CO2
8
Q
Oxidative phosphorylation
A
The remaining electron carries turn energy into ATP
ATP
and water is produced
