Q

Phase 1 :

A

Invest
- An endergonic process where ATP gets hydrolyzed
- Takes place in the cytoplasm
- The negatively charged phosphates allow for it to split into two parts

Q

Pyruvate oxidation

A
  • in eukaryotic cells: mitochondrial matrix
  • Pyruvate gets split to produce carbon dioxide and ATP is produced
  • Electrons get transferred from NAD+ to NADH
  • The remaining Acetyl group gets moved onto the next step

Q

The citric acid cycle

A
  • Acetyl group is fully oxidized to carbon dioxide
  • twice as many ATP and electron carriers are produced
  • Acetyl group gets regenerated
  • goes from a 6 carbon molecule to a 4 carbon molecule releasing more carbon dioxide

End goal:
- 3 NADH
- 2 FADH2
- 2 ATP
- CO2
