chapter 8.1- An overview of photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the photic zone and where is it found?
the surface layer of the ocean where sunlight can penetrate and photosynthesis can occur
How do photosynthetic organisms adapt to environments that lack water?
They form a desert crust which is a fragile layer on the top of soil.
What is reduced during photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide to form a carbohydrate
What gets oxidized during photosynthesis?
Water
Explain the experiment that proves that water is the electron donor and not carbon dioxide?
- Chlorella was placed into two tubes one tube with higher concentration of oxygen in water and another with carbon dioxide the one
- The one with the higher concentration of oxygen in water had a higher percentage
What is the photosynthetic electron transport chain?
the process of the oxidization of water and reduction of carbon dioixde
What are the steps of photosynthetic electron transport chain?
- Sunlight gets absorbed by protein -pigment
- The absorbed energy drives the electrons to start the chain reaction
- ATP and NAPDH is produced
- ATP and NAPDH are used in the calvin cycle to synthesize carbon dioxide
What is the thylakoid membrane and why is it important?
the center of chloroplast and it is where the ETC is located
What is grana?
- appears like stacks of vertical pancakes
- 3 pancakes squished together
What is lumen?
Connects the grana together is located in the center stack of the grana.
What is stroma?
- surrounds the thykloid
- carbohydrate synthesis takes place in the stroma
