Chapter 29.4- Root growth and development Flashcards
How does root stems grow?
The root apical meristem grows roots at its tip after elongation ends and differention starts
What are some ways in which roots differ from plant stems?
- roots are thinner than stems. Increases SA:V ratio to absorb more nutrients in plant soil
- roots contain a root cap to protect the meristem of the root.
- Roots cannot be seen without a microscope
What is the Casparian strip?
a waxy band that surrounds endodermal cells it makes all cells enter the xylem through the plasma membrane.
Draw and label the structure of a root
Draw into textbook
How is auxin received by roots? and what function does it deserve?
- Auxin gets produced by the shoot meristems
- Moves down the stem into roots by phloem
- Reaches the root cap and triggers the creation of procambial cells
What transformations occur during secondary growth of root cells?
has a secondary xylem and secondary phloem just as plant stems
How to roots branch off?
they branch from root meristems located in the pericycle, which is a layer of cells outside the endodermis.
it grows through the endodermis cortex and epidermis
What is a consequence of roots coming from the pericycle?
new roots can form from the pericycle randomly. These new roots are short live but use up carbon and energy from the cell.
What do plants with swollen roots store?
starch
