Thrombosis Flashcards
Define thrombosis
Defined as a solid mass formed IN the circulation from the constituents of the blood during life - essentially clot within a blood vessel
What are fragments of thrombi called
Emboli
How is thrombosis prevented
COX inhibitor - ASPIRIN
CLOPIDOGREL
DIPYRAMIDOLE
Role of Dipyramidole
Inhibits phosphors-esterase breakdown of cAMP
How common is DVT
25-50% of surgical patients
What proportion of patients are asymptomatic for DVT
65%
Do DVTS often embolise in the lungs
No
Genetic causes of DVT
- Factor V Leiden
PT20210A
Antithrombin deficiency
Protein C or S deficiency
How is DVT acquired
- Anti-Phospholipid syndrome
- Lupus anticoagulant
- Hyperhomhocysteinaemia
If a DVT is below th knee, is this much of a concern
No
When is a DVT fatal
Above the knee in the proximal leg vein
Risk factors for DVT
- Increased age
- Pregnancy
- Trauma
- Cancer
- Obesity
- Synthetic oestrogen
- Surgery
Symptoms of DVT
Pain in the calf, swelling, redness + engorged superficial veins
Affected calf is warmer + ankle oedema
What can happen in complete occlusion in DVT
Particularly in a large vein can result in cyanotic discolouration of the limb + severe oedema
When are pulmonary embolisms more common in DVT
When DVT is in iliofemoral thrombosis
