The Memory System Flashcards
What is the central executive
Controls the working memory and coordinates the 3 components. Controls flow of information in and out
What is the Visuospatial Sketchpad
Concerns visual and spatial info
Used to temporarily store info
Contains 2 sections :
Visual cache - Info about form and colour
Inner scribe - Spatial and movement info
Phonological loop
Deals with auditory info from senses
Helps produce the memory trace
Episodic buffer
Coordinates work of phonological loop and visuospatial sketchpad into sequences to be sent to LTM
These sequences are the starting point for the initiation of motor programmes
What does the working memory do
Picks up relevant info from display
Uses selective attention
Links to LTM, sending coded info for future storage and use
From relevant info, memory grace produced and sent to LTM
What does the long term memory do in this model?
Compares memory trace to info stored in LTM
LTM sends info back to working memory to be used in current sporting situation
Features and functions of memory system
Action initiated by WM sending a memory trace to LTM
WM has limited capacity (7 things)
Info overload prevented by selective attention
WM lasts 30 seconds before used or lost
Important info can be stored in LTM as motor programme
LTM has large capacity
Method for storing information
Mental practise
Focus
Rewards
Chunking - Break skill into parts
Association
Repetition
Chaining
Mr Francis Regulary Cheers At Rugby Competitions
Who came up with the working memory model
Baddley and Hitch
What is the order of the memory system involving the STSS?
Receptors
Short term sensory store
Short term memory (Links to Long term memory
Decision marking
What is the purpose of the short term sensory store?
Selective attention, filters out irrelevant stimuli by discarding it
Sends relevant info to short term memory
What is the capacity of the working memory?
7 items
How long does the working memory retain information for?
30 seconds
