Measurements of energy expenditure Flashcards
What are the methods of measuring energy expenditre?
Indirect calorimetry
Lactate sampling
VO2 max test
RER
What is indirect calorimetry?
A method that measures how much CO2 produced and how much O2 is consumed per breath
What does indirect calorimetry help us to work out?
Helps to work out metabolic rate of performer and indicate what their nutritional needs are
Define VO2 max
The maximum volume of oxygen that can be taken up and used by the body per minute
What tests can be done to guage a performers VO2 max?
Multi stage fitness test
Harvard step test
Direct gas analysis
Define RER
The ratio of carbon dioxide produced compared to oxygen consumed.
What does RER provide a measure of?
What fuel is being used during exercise
When RER is 0.7, what energy source is being used and therefore what energy system?
Fats are being used
So aerobic work is being done
When RER is around or above 1, what energy source is being used and therefore energy system?
Performer using carbs
So primarily anaerobic work is occuring
What piece of equipment is used in indirect calorimery?
Metabolic cart
What is lactate sampling?
Taking blood samples to measure concentration of lactate in the blood
What is the relationship between lactate threshold and VO2 max?
Lactate threshold is a % of VO2 max
By taking blood lactate samples, what can be measured from the concentration of lactate?
The intensity the performer is working at and the intensity in which OBLA is reached
When measuring VO2 max, should the performer be at rest or exercise at increasing intensity until exhaustion?
Exercise at increasing intensity until exhaustion
When measuring metabolic rate via indirect calorimetry, should the performer be at rest or exercise at increasing intensity until exhaustion?
Be at rest
