Injury rehabilitation Flashcards
5 Methods of injury rehabilitation
Proprioceptive training
Strength training
Hydrotherapy
Cryotherapy
Hyperbaric chambers
What is proprioceptive training
Training impaired proprioceptors that have been inactive since injury
Help detect limp position + speed of movement
Can use bosu balance board
Types of strength training
Machine
Free
Body
Therabands
Machine weights benefits and drawbacks
Controls weight and stabilises it, good in early rehab stage
However range of motion limited, movements dont always mimic sporting actions, focus on large muscle groups
Free weights benefits and drawbacks
Varying degrees of weight, targets specific muscle groups easier, can be sport specific, activates stabilising muscles
However, poor form/ technique causes injury
Body weight benefits and drawbacks
Improves balance, posture
Puts less stress on the body, low impact beneficial in early rehab stages
However, less opportunity to overload/build strength to a higher degree
Therabands benefits and drawbacks
varying resistance, can be used early stage
However they can snap, causing further injury
Cryotherapy benefits and drawbacks
Use of cold temperatures
Cold temp causes vasoconstriction, vascular shunt mechanism
Blood rushes to cold area after therapy, floods muscle with oxygenated nutrient rich blood and removes lactic acid
However may cost a lot, may not use with health conditions, may hinder muscle growth
Hyperbaric chambers benefits and drawbacks
100% pure oxygen, fully saturated haemoglobin.
Increased WBC at injured site. Reduces swelling and pressure at injured area
However, expensive and time consuming
Hydrotherapy benefits and drawbacks
35-37 degrees. Warm water improves blood circulation, relives pain, relaxes muscle.
Buoyancy supports weight, makes exercise easier, water resistance strengthen injured area
however may be inaccessible, expensive
What is proprioception?
Subconscious process using a system of receptor nerves located in muscles, joints and tendons
