PNF Stretching Flashcards
What is PNF
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation
What is the CRAC technique
Contract
Relax
Antagonist
Contract
What are Proprioceptors and what types are there
Sensory organs in the muscles, tendons and joints that inform the body of the extent of movement
Muscle spindles
Golgi tendon organs
Where are muscle spindles found
Between skeletal muscle fibres
Where are golgi tendon organs found
Between the muscle fibre and tendon
What do muscle spindles detect
How fast + far a muscle has been stretched
What do golgi tendon organs detect
Levels of tension in a muscle
What do the muscle spindle do
Produces stretch reflex to prevent overstretching
Provides info to CNS about muscle stretch, signal sent back to stimulate muscle contraction to trigger stretch reflex and prevent overstretch
What does the golgi tendon organ do
Sense increase in muscle tension during isometric muscle contraction during PNF
Sends inhibitory signals to brain that allow antagonist muscle to relax and lengthen, preventing stretch reflex
This is called Autogenic inhibition
Autogenic inhibition
Sudden relaxation of the muscle in response to high tension
Prevents muscle reflex
What decreases immediately after autogenic inhibition
Power and speed
