How is inspiration and expiration controlled during rest and exercise
A
Increase in CO2 detected by chemoreceptors
Send impulse to respiratory centre
Inspiratory centre send impulse via phrenic nerve, stimulating inspiratory muscles to contract (diaphragm+ external intercostals)
Recoil of lungs forces expiration
During exercise, sternocleidomastoid + scalenes+ pectorals recruited
Expiratory centre stimulates abdominals to expire

What are the effects of smoking
A
Irritates bronchi and trachea
Reduces lung function
Damaged cilia
Damages alveoli - affect gaseous exchange
Affect O2 transport as CO present
