Energy systems Flashcards

1
Q

What is ATP splitting

A

3rd phosphate breaks of the ATP via enzyme ATPase, releases heat and energy for muscular contraction

Q

What is the ATP-PC system

A

High levels of ADP detected
Release of enzyme creatine kinase
Breaks down creatine phosphate into a creatine and phosphate
This releases energy to be used to resynthesise ATP

Q

Characteristics of ATP - PC system

A

2-10 seconds
anaerobic
Fuel - creatine phosphate
Occurs at sarcoplasm
Can only be resynthesised in presence of O2
1:1 ratio
No fatiguing biproducts

Q

What is the process of anaerobic glycolysis

A

Glycogen from muscles/liver broken down into glucose-6-phosphate by Phosphofructokinase
Glucose-6-phosphate broken down into pyruvate by glucose phosphorylase
Lactate dehydrogenase converts pyruvate into lactic acid as waste product
Some lactic acid can be converted into glycogen in presence of O2

Q

Characteristics of anaerobic glycolysis

A

Lasts 10seconds-3mins
Occurs in sarcoplasm
No O2 is used
Net 2 ATP gained
2:1 ratio
Only small amount of energy is released from glycogen in these conditions
