Terms and meaning from Dictionary of Tariff and Customs Terms with organization and functions of the various Offices of the Bureau of Customs.
a kind of jurisdiction over all legal actions related to events occurring at sea, to transactions on commerce and navigation, to damages and injuries sustained at sea, and all maritime contracts, torts, and injuries.

mixing of foreign substances with something pure.
adulteration
assessment based on the value of goods. It literally means “according to value.”
ad valorem
a tariff assessed as a percentage of the value of imported goods cleared through customs. For ex., 10% ad valorem means the tariff rate is 10% of the dutiable value of the goods. It is a tax based on selling price or other specified value of the article.
ad valorem tax
a kind of loan that uses documents, such as bill of lading, as collateral to obtain goods.
advance against documents
a bill or invoice presented by the supplier to the buyer before delivery of goods.
advance bill
a document issued by the Societe Generale de Surveillance to a Customs office at the port of destination, to indicate that a shipment has been inspected at the port of origin. This does not yet contain the full details of the shipment.
Advance Clean Report
a charge paid by the carrier to an agent or to another carrier. It is often used to cover forwarding fees and incidental expenses. The amount is eventually paid by the consignee:
advance charge
payment of duties and taxes by an importer to an authorized agent bank.
advance deposit
similar to a guaranteed freight, it is the partial payment of cargo freight even before the ship reaches the port of destination.
Advanced freight
an interline carrier that picks up cargo from the shipper and delivers it to another carrier for eventual delivery.
Advanced interline
a kind of tax paid by importers on articles subject of sale, barter, exchange, or any similar transaction.
Advanced sales tax
a list transmitted to a customer stating the items shipped and their expected time of arrival.
advance shipment notice
a kind of security given to the buyer/importer if he pays in advance, so the he can reclaim payment if the shipment is not affected.
