17
Q

What is the purpose of the Residual Heat Removal System?

A

1) The Residual Heat Removal System primary function is to remove heat energy from the core and the Reactor Coolant System to the Component Cooling System during plant cooldown and refueling operation.
2) The Residual Heat Removal System can also be used to transfer refueling water between the Refueling Water Storage Tank and the Refueling Cavity at the beginning and end of refueling operations.
3) The system is also part of the Emergency Core Cooling System(ECCS) during a Design Basis Event(DBE) and the Containment Spray System.
4) Provides auxiliary Pressurizer Spray when the Reactor Coolant Pumps are not in service.

18
Q

What is the purpose of the Containment Spray System?

A

The Containment Spray System:

1) Removes thermal energy form the Containment atmosphere in the event of a LOCA.
2) Maintains Containment pressure below the Containment design limit after all the ice in the Ice Condenser has melted.

19
Q

What is the purpose of the Safety Injection System?

A

The Safety Injection System:

1) The Safety Injection System, and the common purpose of the Emergency Core Cooling Systems, is to provide emergency core cooling to the Reactor Core in the event of a break in either the primary(Reactor Coolant) or secondary(Steam) systems.
2) The specific purposes are:
a. Provides emergency core cooling for loss of coolant accidents where the primary system pressure falls below pump shutoff head.
b. Provides borated water to the core in the event of a steam line break to maintain core shutdown margin.

What is the purpose of the Chemical and Volume Control System?

A

The Chemical and Volume Control System:

1) Maintains programmed Pressurizer level i.e. Reactor Coolant System inventory.
2) Provides seal water Injection to the Reactor Coolant Pumps.
3) Control water chemistry, activity level, and Boron concentration.
4) Maintain proper concentration of corrosion inhibiting chemicals in the reactor coolant.
5) Perform “high head Injection” portion of emergency core cooling.
