What is the purpose of the Main Turbine Lube Oil and Purification System?
- Supplies lubricating and control oil to the turbine generator bearings, gears, and supervisory components
- Provides makeup supply to the LG(Seal Oil) System
What does the Main Turbine Lube Oil supply control oil for?
- Mechanical Trip Piston - normally supplied to keep the trip latch reset
- Reset Trip Piston - during reset only
- Overspeed Trip Device - during overspeed testing only
What does the Main Turbine Lube Oil System provide lubrication and cooling to?
- 12 Journal Bearings
- Thrust Bearing components
- Turning Gear
- Gear to Auxiliary Rotor
- Four Couplings between TG shaft and Generator Shaft
What is the design/purpose of the Main Oil Pump(MOP)?
- Located in the Front Standard of the turbine
- Driven at 3600rpm by the turbine shaft through a step-up gear
- Suction supplied by the Motor Suction Pump(MSP) on startup and Oil Driven Turbine Booster Pump during normal operation
- Normal discharge pressure approximately 260psig
What is the design/purpose of the Oil Driven Turbine Booster Pump?
- Located in the Main Turbine Lube Oil Tank(MTOT) along with along with the oil turbine which drives it
- Supplies the MOP with 15psig to 20psig suction oil
- Supplies the suction requirements of the MOP at about 95% turbine speed.
- Approximately 220psig operating oil discharging from the MOP passes through booster pump turbine to drive the pump
What is the design/purpose of the Booster Nozzle Baffler and Baffler Bypass Valves?
- Work together to control oil flow to the Oil Driven Turbine Booster Pump and bearing header oil pressure
- Located in the MTOT
- Booster Nozzle Baffler Valve controls oil flow to the Turbine Booster Pump to maintain proper suction pressure at the MOP(approximately 35psig)
- Booster Bypass Baffler Valve controls bearing header pressure at approximately 30psig by bypassing some oil around the bearing header
What is the design/purpose of the Bearing Relief Valve?
- Controls bearing header pressure at approximately 30psig working in conjunction with the Booster Bypass Baffler Valve
- Maintains approximately 25psig at the shaft centerline
What is the design/purpose of the Turning Gear Oil Pump?
- Supplies lube oil to the bearing header while on the turning gear and while starting up or shutting down
- Up to approximately 70% speed the TGOP provides all bearing lubrication
- Greater than 70%, MOP will gradually take over and the TGOP will be operating against a closed check valve
- The TGOP is manually shut down when the turbine is at rated speed
When will the Turning Gear Oil Pump automatically start?
- Operating header pressure drops to 190psig
OR - Bearing header pressure drops to 15psig
What is the design/purpose of the Motor Suction Pump?
- Maintains the proper pressure at the suction of the MOP during startup and shutdown
- Near rated pressure the Oil Driven Turbine Booster Pump will gradually take over and the MSP will be operating against a closed check valve
- Manually stopped after the turbine is at rated speed
What will cause the Motor Suction Pump to start automatically?
The MSP will automatically start when the MOP suction pressure drops to less than 10psig
What is the design/purpose of the Emergency Bearing Oil Pump?
The EBOP will provide oil to the bearing header in an emergency when all other pumps are lost.
What will cause the Emergency Bearing Oil Pump to start automatically?
- Operating oil pressure drops to 180psig
AND - Bearing header pressure drops to 10psig
What is the design/purpose of the Main Turbine Lube Oil Coolers?
- Two coolers with one normally in service
2. The coolers can be shifted when the unit is in operation via a transfer valve
What is the normal operating band for Main Turbine Lube Oil temperature?
110F - 120F
What provides cooling to the Main Turbine Lube Oil Coolers?
The Low Pressure Service Water System(RL)
What is the design/purpose of the High Pressure Lift Pumps?
- There are 8 high pressure positive displacement lift pumps(approximately 2300psig)
- Reduce the torque requirements on the turning gear by lifting the shaft off of the bearings
When do the High Pressure Lift Pumps start automatically?
- The lift pumps start and stop with a permissive signal of 10psig from the TGOP discharge
- The lift pump must see a suction pressure of greater than or equal to 6psig to start
What pressure will cause the High Pressure Lift Pump’s light indications to change?
- Discharge pressure of 325psig extinguishes the green OFF light
- Discharge pressure of 900psig turns the red ON light
When are the High Pressure Lift Pumps operated?
The High Pressure Lift Pumps are operated whenever the Main Turbine is operating less than 50% of rated speed, and will AUTO start when the TGOP starts.
