Diesel Generator Engine Jacket Cooling Water System(KD) Flashcards
What is the purpose of the Diesel Generator Engine Jacket Water Cooling System?
- The primary purpose of the Diesel Generator Engine Jacket Water Cooling system is to maintain the temperature of the diesel generator engine within an optimum range during all phases of operation:
A. Warming the engine during standby in order to minimize metal stressed during fast-start.
B. Cooling the engine during operation to reduce thermal stress.
C. Dissipating residual heat following shutdown. - The system also provides cooling water to:
A. Lube Oil Cooler
B. Intake Air Aftercoolers
C. Governor Lube Oil Cooler
What is the system designator for the Diesel Generator Engine Jacket Water Cooling System?
KD
What is the design and purpose of the Jacket Water Cooler?
- Maintains the D/G Jacket Water temperature for efficient diesel operation.
- Shell and tube heat exchanger with Jacket Water tasing through the shell side at approximately 1550gpm.
- Nuclear Service Water(RN) flows through the tube side at approximately 900gpm to provide cooling.
- RN is automatically aligned when the D/G starts.
What is the capacity and normal operating volume of the Jacket Water Standpipe?
The Jacket Water Standpipe is a 600 gallon tank:
A. Normal operating volume is 560 gallons
B. Low level alarm set at approximately 20 inches below normal operating water level.
What is the purpose of the Jacket Water Standpipe?
The Jacket Water Standpipe Serves the following purposes:
A. Surge Tank for KD system
B. Provides for system venting
C. Maintains NPSH for the Keep Warm and Engine Driven Jacket Water Pumps.
How is the Jacket Water Standpipe level maintained?
Level is maintained by manually makeup using the Demineralized Water System(YM).
What is the design/purpose of the Jacket Water Heaters?
- The Jacket Water Heaters are thermostatically controlled electric immersion heaters.
- Maintain Jacket Water temperature at approximately 145F
- A temperature switch monitors the temperature in the Jacket Water Standpipe and will switch off the heater if temperate exceeds the high temperature cutoff value.
What is the power supply to the Jacket Water Heaters?
Essential 600VAC load centers EMXE and EMXF
What is the interlock between the Jacket Water Heater and the Keep Warm Pump?
The Jacket Water Heater will only cycle to maintain temperature when the Keep Warm Pump is running.
What is the design/purpose of the Engine Driven Jacket Water Pump?
- Only operates when the D/G is running.
- Provides the motive force to circulate water from the Jacket Water Standpipe through thermostatic control valve to the Jacket Water Cooler and to the various system loads.
- No external controls are available
What is the design/purpose of the Thermostatic Control Valve?
- 3-way thermostatic control valve.
- Regulates the flow of Jacket Water through the shell side of the Jacket Water Cooler.
- Maintains Jacket Water temperature during diesel operation at approximately 165F.
What is the design of the Jacket Water Keep Warm Pump?
- AC motor driven
- Single Stage
- Centrifugal pump
What is the purpose of the Jacket Water Keep Warm Pump?
The Jacket Water Keep Warm Pump runs when the D/G is shutdown in “AUTO” or runs continuously in “RUN” to:
A. Removes residual heat on initial D/G shutdown
B. Provides approximately 50gpm recirculation flow to maintain the engine in a warmed condition while shutdown to reduce thermal stresses during D/G starts.
What is the power supply to the Jacket Water Keep Warm Pump?
Essential 600VAC load centers EMXE and EMXF
What are the local indications for the Diesel Generator Engine Jacket Water Cooling System?
- There are red(ON) and green(OFF) lights at the DECP to provide indication of the Keep Warm Pump status.
- RUN/AUTO control switch for the Keep Warm Pump and Jacket Water Heater at the DECP.
- Jacket Water pressure is indicated at the DECP.
- Indication of Diesel Engine Jacket Water outlet temperature is provided on the Non-Emergency Trip Monitor located in the Diesel Engine Shutdown Monitoring Panel.
