Diesel Generator Engine Fuel Oil System(FD) Flashcards
What is the purpose of the Diesel Generator Engine Fuel Oil System?
The primary purpose of the Diesel Generator Engine Fuel Oil System is to store and supply fuel to the diesel generators’ engines for a period of operation of no less than 7 days.
What is the system designator for the Diesel Generator Engine Fuel Oil System?
FD
What is the description and purpose of the D/G Engine Fuel Oil System Storage Tanks?
- Two FD Storage Tanks per Emergency Diesel Generator
- Each Storage Tank has a 45,000 gallon capacity for a total of 90,000 gallons.
- The tanks are centrally located in the yard underground beneath a concrete reinforced missile shield.
How much Fuel Oil is required for 7 days of Emergency Diesel Generator operation?
77,100 gallons for 7 days of operation at 5750KW load
How is Fuel Oil Storage Tank level determined?
- Level is determined by reading a level gauge in %
2. The % is calculated to gallons using an enclosure in the Operating Procedure.
What is the purpose of the Fuel Oil Recirculation and Filtration System?
The fuel oil recirculation and filtration system prevents settling, stratification, and deterioration of the fuel oil during extended storage periods. The purpose of the system is to minimize the amount of particulate contaminants being transferred through the Diesel Generator Engine Fuel Oil System by way of the Fuel Oil Storage Tanks.
What are the components of the Fuel Oil Recirculation and Filtration System?
- One high capacity pump per Unit
- Clay polishing filter
- Two simplex filters(one pre-filter and one post-filter)
What is the design of the Fuel Oil Recirculation Pump?
- AC motor driven
- Single Stage
- Positive displacement
- Manually operated
What is the purpose of the Fuel Oil Recirculation Pump?
- Circulates the contents of the Fuel Oil Storage Tank
- Removes accumulated water in the Fuel Oil Storage Tank
- Transfers the contents of the Fuel Oil Storage Tank
Where are the Fuel Oil Recirculation Pumps operated from?
The recirculation pumps are manually operated from the Diesel Engine Fuel Oil Filtration Skid control panel located outside in the yard.
What is the power supply to the Fuel Oil Recirculation Pumps?
The pumps are powered from non-essential 600V MCCs 1MXC and 2MXC.
What conditions will cause a trip of the Fuel Oil Recirculation Pumps?
- When the D/G reaches 95% speed and voltage whether started manually or automatically - run relay actuated.
- When either D/G receives a sequencer start signal(independent of the run-relay) to prevent stirring of sediment.
- Any Fuel Oil Storage Tank level decreases to the Technical Specification warning level.
* A local bypass switch allows the Fuel Oil Recirculation Pump to be used with a Technical Specification low level warning present*
What is the design of the Fuel Oil Recirculation Filters?
- Pre-filter - removes large particulate contaminants(>5 micron) prior to entering the Clay Filter.
- Clay Filter - only used when directed by Engineering when the formation of particulate contaminants is detected in the storage tanks.
- Post-filter - ensures no contaminants(>1/2 micron) are released from the polisher to the storage tank.
What is the precaution associated with using the Polisher(Clay Filter)?
The Clay Filter will remove chemical additives in the Fuel Oil, so they will have to be replaced when operation is complete.
What is the normal Fuel Oil Recirculation and Filter System alignment?
The Recirculation Pump runs continuously with the Pre-Filter and Post-Filter in service. The Clay Filter is normally bypassed, and drained.
What is the design of the Fuel Oil Day Tank?
- Total capacity is 619 gallons.
- Gravity fed from the Fuel Oil Storage Tanks via the by the fill valve.
- Surrounded by a Retaining Wall
How is Fuel Oil Day Tank level determined?
Level is determined by the static head of the oil in the Day Tank using a pressure gauge.
What is the minimum Fuel Oil Day Tank level required by Technical Specifications, and what is the corresponding pressure reading?
- The Day Tank shall contain at least 470 gallons in accordance with Tech Specs.
- This is verified by ensuring pressure is >1.96psig
