Fire Detection System(EFA) Flashcards
What is the purpose of the Fire Detection System?
- Monitors areas(zones) for the plant for smoke and/or fire and provides alarms and control output as necessary
- Monitors the Fire Protection Sprinkler System(RF)
How many fire protection zones are there in the plant?
There are 238 fire protection zones in the plant
What component receives an input from the fire detectors?
The Fire Alarm Control Panels(FACPs) receive input from the fire detectors and provide an input to the Fireworks Control Consoles.
How many Fire Alarm Control Panels are there, and what component do they provide an input to?
- There are a total of 36 Fire Alarm Control Panels
- There are 34 FACPs connected in a serial ring called the Core Communication Loop(CCL)
- FACPs 37 and 38 send signals to the Fireworks Control Consoles in the Control Room(Consoles #1 and #2)
Where are fire alarms displayed?
- Locally on the Fire Alarm Control Panels
2. Fireworks Control Consoles
What are the Fire Alarm Control Panels equipped with for an emergency source of power?
The FACPs have an internal battery backup capable of providing power for 24 hours
What is advantageous of the Fire Alarm Control Panels configuration?
The FACPs are configured in such a way that any FACP can provide the status of any other detector or FACP connected in the loop.
Where are the power supplies to the Fire Alarm Control Panels?
1KXPB and 2KXPB
Where are the Fireworks Control Consoles located?
The Control Room
What is the power supply to the Fireworks Control Consoles?
#1 Console - 1KXPB(primary), auto swaps to 2KXPB(backup) #2 Console - 2KXPB(primary), auto swaps to 1KXPB(backup)
What are the events and the associated colors displayed on the Fire Control Consoles?
Alarms(red events)
Trouble(yellow events)
alarms have to be acknowledged on both consoles to allow another alarm to flash on the consoles
What are the four major screens on the Fire Control Consoles?
- Browser or Alarm Screen
- Event Action Screen
- Map Screen
- Event List Screen
What affect does an abnormal state have on the Fire Control Consoles?
When a Fire Alarm Control Panel comes into an abnormal state the Fire Control Console screen will automatically change to the Annunciator Response Screen.
What are the indications on the Map Screen of the Fire Control Console?
- The Map Screen displays a particular fire zone and the detectors in that zone.
- Colors/indication:
A. Blue - detector is normal
B. Red - detector in alarm
C. Yellow - detector trouble
D. Grey - detector is disabled
Where can alarms be read on the Fire Control Consoles?
Alarms can be read from:
- Event Action Screen
- Even List Screen
* Alarms can be silenced from the Event Action Screen*
What are the color codes for alarms received on the Fire Control Console?
- Yellow - trouble events and supervisory events
- Green - Restored events
- Red - Fire events
What are the types of fire detectors that are utilized in the Fire Detection System?
- 4D Multisensor Detectors
- Thermal Detectors
- Ultraviolet Flame Detectors
- Heat Sensitive Cable Detectors
What is the design/purpose of the 4D Multisensor Detectors?
1. Contains 3 fire sensing elements: A. Ionization B. Photoelectric C. Heat 2. Most detectors are this type, but the Containment detectors were not replaced
Where is it useful to use ionization elements?
Ionization elements are suited for electrical fires where smoldering proceeds flames
Where is it useful to use Photoelectric Elements?
Photoelectric elements are useful in high humidity areas
What is the design/purpose of the Ultraviolet Flame Detectors?
- Very fast response time
- Sensitive to arc welding
- Must be in the direct line of sight of the flames
- Detects the UV light given off by flames
Where are Ultraviolet Flame Detectors normally used?
- Used where oil is the primary hazard
- Used around the Spent Fuel Pool due to the ceiling height. The height of the ceiling would prevent a quick response from a smoke detector.
What are the two types of Thermal Detectors?
- Fixed Temperature
2. Rate-of-rise
What are the two categories of Thermal Detectors?
- Non-restorable
2. Restorable
What is the difference between a restorable and a non-restorable Thermal Detector?
- Restorable will reset when the temperature returns to normal and can be reused
- Non-restorable must be replaced after an actuation
Where are the Thermal Detectors typically used?
- Areas protected by Mulsifyres
2. Areas protected by CO2
What is the design/purpose of the Heat Sensitive Cable Detector?
- Stainless steel cable detects changes in conductivity due to temperature changes
- Located around the NC pumps and the Annulus
- Self resetting when temperature lowers below 225F
What is the design/purpose of the Annulus Fire Detection Sub-System?
- Monitors Annulus for fire and provides output signal to FACPs
- Separate panel in the 560’ elevation
- 6 zones(20 points in each zone)
- Panel contains a graphic display of the “hot spot”
- Operator will have to be dispatched to determine the location of the fire when an Annulus alarm is received in the Control Room
Who is notified of any Fire Detection/Protection System discrepancies?
The WCC SRO/Fire Brigade is notified of any impairment
What is a Fire Impairment?
The inability of any part of the Fire Protection/Detection System, Fire Rated Barrier, or related support system to function as designed.
What are the responsibilities of the WCC SRO?
- Completes fire impairments
- Assigns fire watches
- Notifies Fire Protection Engineer of impairments
- Approves compensatory actions
What are Compensatory Actions?
The steps taken to minimize the fire risk potential due to a fire protection feature impairment such as staging backup suppression, temporary fire detection, fire watch tours, etc.
What is the definition of Fire Watch?
Person assigned to patrol and observe an area for the purpose of detecting and reporting fire hazards and fires
What is the definition of Continuous?
Fire Watch must remain in assigned locations at all time. May be stationary or patrol assigned locations at least once every 15 minutes.
- Shall not be assigned more than one Fire Area
- May cover multiple elevations or rooms as long as it’s a single Fire Area
What is the “Grace Period” associated with Fire Watches?
A “Grace Period” of 25% is allowed to complete a periodic Fire Watch not to exceed 30 minutes.
not intended to be cumulative
