STROKE Flashcards
Stroke
death of brain tissue from hypoxia due to no local cerebral blood flow
stoke predisposing factor
transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
TIA recovery time
within 24 hours
most within 30 mins
TIA
Transient ischaemic attack due to platelet emboli in blood vessels of neck leading to localised loss of brain function
stroke risk factors
hypertension
smoking
alcohol
ischaemic heart disease
atrial fibrillation
diabetes
prevention of stroke
stop smoking, alcohol, control hypertension
medication - aspirin, dipyridamole, clopidogrel
embolic stroke
blood clot travels from elsewhere in the body
what pts would undergo carotid endarterectomy
severe stenosis and have had previous TIAs and over 85 years old
what pts would undergo preventative neurosurgery
aneurysm clips
AV malformation correction
stroke investigations
CT scan
MRI scan
Digital substraction angiography
stroke effects - physiologically
loss of functional brain tissue; gradual or rapid
Inflammation in the tissue surrounding the infarct/ bleed
stroke symptoms
motor function loss
dysphonia and swallowing issues
sensory loss and body perception (neglect/ phantom limbs)
cognitive impairment
management of acute stroke
calcium channel blockers
thrombolysis possible within 3 hrs
remove haematoma
preventing future risk of stroke
aspirin 300mg daily
anticoagulation in indicated
when would anticoagulants be indicated in pts at risk of stroke
AF
LV thrombus
