What are the signs and symptoms of urethritis?
Urethral discharge and/or dysuria
Which pathogens can cause urethritis?
- N. gonorrhoeae
- C. trachomatis,

What is the most common cause of nongonococcal urethritis?
C. trachomatis
Describe the urethral discharge of nongonococcal urethritis
Mucoid or watery
Describe the urethral discharge of gonococcal urethritis
Copious and purulent
What percentage of nongonococcal urethritis are asymptomatic?
5%-10%
What percentage of gonococcal urethritis are asymptomatic?
Approximately 40%
Which features confirm urethritis?
- mucopurulent discharge
- Gram stain of urethral secretions demonstrating >5 white blood cells per high power field
- positive leukocyte esterase test
- more than 10 white blood cells per high power field on urine sediment
- cultures and nucleic acid amplification tests for C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae
What is the treatment for nongonococcal urethritis?
- Azithromycin 1 g PO × 1 or
- Doxycycline 100 mg PO twice daily for 7 days
What is the treatment for gonococcal urethritis?
- Ceftriaxone 125 mg IM × 1 or
- Cefixime 400 mg PO × 1 or
- Cefpodoxime 400 mg PO × 1
How long should patients and their sexual partners refrain from sexual contact to avoid reinfection?
- Until the patient and his/her partner(s) have completed their courses of antibiotics and all symptoms have resolved
