Neuorlogy\ Intracranial Hemorrhage Flashcards
1
Q
What are the four major types of intracranial hemorrhage?
A
- epidural hematoma
- subdural hematoma
- subarachnoid hemorrhage
- intracerebral hemorrhage
2
Q
What causes an epidural hematoma?
A
- bleeding from menigeal arteries (classically, the middle meningeal artery)
3
Q
What percent of epidural hematomas are associated with skull fracture?
A
85%
4
Q
How do you recognize an epidural hematoma?
A
- history of head trauma with loss of consciousness
- followed by a lucid interval
- then immediate neurologic deterioration
5
Q
what causes a subdural hematoma?
A
- bleeding from bridging veins between the cortex and venous sinuses
6
Q
what patient populations are vulnerable to subdural hematomas?
A
- elderly and alcoholics
7
Q
How do you differentiate between an epidural hematoma and subdural hematoma on CT Scan?
A
- An epidural hematoma is lenticular or binconvex
- a subdural is crescent-shaped
8
Q
What causes a subarachnoid haemorrhage?
A
- bleeding between the arachnoid and pia mater
- usually secondary to trauma or berry aneuryms rupture
9
Q
How do you make a definitive diagnosis of a subarachnoid hemorrhage?
A
- A lumbar puncture demostrate blood or xanthochromia.
- CT may or may not show blood in the ventricles and surrounding brain and brainstem.
10
