What virus is associated with cutaneous warts?
Benign epithelial hyperplasia caused by epidermal infection with human papillomavirus (HPV)
What is the characteristic appearance of a wart?
Flesh-colored, hyperkeratotic papule with vegetations, especially on the fingers and extremities
What is the pathognomonic finding for warts?
Black dots within the lesion, commonly referred to as “seeds,” representing thrombosed capillary loops
Who is at higher risk for the development of cutaneous warts?
- individuals with decreased cell-mediated immunity
- workers in specific occupations (eg, butchers, meat packers, and fish handlers)
How are warts transmitted?
A break within the stratum corneum allows penetration of the HPV virus through contact with humans or animals infected with HPV
How long does it take for cutaneous warts to resolve?
Two-thirds resolve on own within 2 years
What are the over-the-counter treatment options for cutaneous warts?
- duct tape
- salicylic acid
- cryotherapy
- imiquimod
- curettage and desiccation
- electrosurgery
- cantharidin
- podophyllin
