Immunocompromised (especially leukemia and neutropenia)

Rhzopus and Mucor

Inhalation of spores
What condition predisposes patients to Cucormycoses
Ketoacidosis, in particular diabetic
What are the conditions that are favorable to Cucormycoses
High levels of ketones and glucose (diabetes)
In general, what do Cucormycoses invade
Blood vessels
What is the mechanism/route of infection via Cucormycoses
Invades the blood vessels, travels through the cribriform plate in the frontal cortex
What are the clinical presentations of Cucormycoses
- Necrosis of tissue and frontal cortex abscesses
- Black Escher
- necrosis of the nasal cavity and eye
- Neuro deficits and death (not a good prognosis)
What is the histological presentation of Cucormycoses
90 degree angle of branching hyphae, without any septum
What are the treatments for Cucormycoses
Debridement (removal of dead tissue)
Amphotericin B
