Energy and ATP Flashcards
What is ATP
Only available energy source for muscle contraction stored in the muscle
How is energy extracted from ATP
Enzyme ATPase breaks high energy bond in exothermic reaction, leaving ADP+P
What are the 3 energy systems
- ATP-PC
- Glycolytic
- Aerobic
How quick are ATP stores used
Every 2-3 secs
What exercise is best suited to the ATP-PC system
Anaerobic
What equation relates to the ATP-PC system
ADP + P + energy = ATP
What form of reaction occurs during the ATP-PC system
Endothermic
What is the energy yield of the ATP-PC system
1:1
What is the process of the ATP-PC system
ATP used up in 2-3 secs, so we depend on phosphocreatine (PC). ATP stores fall and ADP+P levels rise, which triggers release of creatine kinase to break down PC in the sarcoplasm to release energy and resynthesize ATP
What is a coupled reaction
Products of one reaction are used by another
What are some advantages of the ATP-PC system
No O2 delay, PC readily available, no by products
What are some disadvantages of the ATP-PC system
Low ATP yield, small PC stores, rapid depletion
